Could You Be a Tad More Specific?

I don’t know if this holds true across the board but after extensive research, (meaning I text polled the girls in my immediate circle of family and friends), what I’m about to say holds true with our men. They’re notoriously vague about expressing their restaurant preferences.

If we ask our men where they want to eat they’re most likely going to toss the question right back. “You decide” is the standard male response and apparently it’s a game because our suggestions are usually met with an if-y face which leads us to make another, and another. Inquiring minds want to know why y’all do this, especially since y’all recover your decision making abilities once we arrive at the final destination. None of us have ever witnessed y’all leaving it up to a waitress to decide what you’re going to eat. I get that. I wouldn’t either. But now that I have everyone’s attention, perhaps it’s time to switch gears before I stir up trouble on the porch.

See, it occurs to me that we could all, male and female, stand a good reminder to be more specific where it really counts— our prayer lives. Asking the Lord to bless your kids is like telling the waitress to bring you something good. Details, please, no server worth his or her salt is going to take a vague food order like that to the chef. Try it and you’ll go hungry.

Granted, God’s not a chef, and we don’t send orders to heaven, so like all analogies, this one breaks down, but learning to articulate specific requests to the Father is a worthy goal that will never fail you. Do you want your children to serve Him? Pray that they’ll walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of Him, Colossians 1:10. By the way, there’s a bonus in this for you! This type of praying will also develop a stronger friendship between you and your God. Now, that’s what I call a win/win!
