George Brett in the Southern Quote
He was born May 15th, 1953, in Glen Dale, the second youngest child in a sports loving family in Glen Dale, West Virginia. George grew up dreaming of becoming a major league baseball player like his older brother.
He was eighteen years old when the Kansas City Royals gave him a shot, picking him in the second round of the 1971 draft. He was a sure-handed, free-spirited raw talent who spent two years in the minor league before being promoted to the Majors. Soon George was developing a reputation as a great third baseman. Unfortunately, he was also known as a questionable bat. It was his decision to spend the 1974 All-Star break working with hitting guru Charley Lau that would put him in the record books. Charley Lau taught George Howard Brett how to go from an all instinct free swinger to a controlled, weight-shifting, thinking batter.
Armed with a new determination to protect the entire plate George Howard Brett steadily improved until he became a legendary nightmare to opposing pitchers, known for his intense concentration and an air of relaxed confidence that suggested he was always one step ahead of the guy on the mound.
George became the franchise player of the Kansas City Royals. He played for twenty-one seasons and holds the honor of being the only man to win batting titles in three different decades. He retired with over 3,100 career hits and a reputation as one of the game’s most feared clutch hitters.
In today’s southern quote we hear the competitive streak of one of the greatest third basemen in Major League Baseball history. Hall of Famer, George Howard Brett has said, “If a tie is like kissing your sister, losing is like kissing you grandmother with her teeth out.” – George Brett
