Hamburger Stroganoff
Hey folks, welcome back to the All Things Southern kitchen. I’m cooking “Hamburger Stroganoff” for supper tonight. It’s a good satisfying meal, but you don’t have to take my word for it. Take it easy while I tell you how to stir it up and if it sounds good to you, you can print it out and go for it.
“Hamburger Stroganoff”
½ cup minced onion
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 clove garlic, minced
1 lb. Fresh mushrooms (or 1 eight ounce can)
¼ cup butter and 3 tablespoons of butter
5 tablespoons flour
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/2 cup milk
1 lb. Ground beef
1 cup sour cream
salt and pepper to taste
We’ll begin by sautéing a half cup of minced onion and a clove of garlic in a couple tablespoons of butter while we brown a pound of ground beef in a different skillet. Once we’ve browned and drained the meat, we’ll add it to our onions and garlic along with a pound of sliced mushrooms. We’ll salt and pepper this to taste and let it cook on low while we make a simple white sauce. I used to use Cream of Chicken Soup, but I try to avoid those cans more all the time. In the event that you don’t know how to make a simple sauce, here are a few easy steps. Just melt a tablespoon of butter and whisk in 2-3 tablespoons of flour. Once it’s smooth, remove it from the heat, season with some salt and pepper and whisk in about a half cup each of chicken broth and milk. Bring it back to a boil and stir it until it thickens. That’s it. All that remains for us to do is to add this white sauce and a cup of sour cream to our meat and mushrooms and heat it through and through. You can serve it over rice or your favorite noodles. We like to garnish it with some grated white cheddar! Enjoy my Hamburger Stroganoff, folks. It’s good eating from my kitchen to yours!
