Inspirational Thoughts from the Slap Happy Cook
If I were to ever have my own cooking show, (and other than the occasional spots I do on morning TV, I don’t foresee that happening) I know just what I’d call it, “The Slap Happy Cook.” That epiphany came to me even before I looked the term up in my handy online dictionary. Check this out: Slap Happy is defined as odd random behavior that can include inane rambling, strange remarks, and laughing at one’s own jokes. I know. Spot on, isn’t it?
On the other hand, I’d like to think that you and I would have a big old time in the kitchen, together. We could share recipes, tips, memories, and of course, stories. There has to be stories. A first hand recipe beats a cookbook, hands down. You do know the best way to get a recipe from your Mama, right? Say you want to make her dumplings, or her cornbread, or maybe her dressing. For heaven’s sake, don’t just ask her for the recipe. You’re bound to miss something that way. Get in the kitchen with her. There’s no substitute for watching her bring a recipe to life, step by step. It’s the sort of training that sticks with a person. And it reminds me of something I read in my devotional this morning.
In John 16:13 Jesus said, “And when He, the Spirit of truth has come, He will guide you into all truth.” I believe neglecting the Holy Word of God is the greatest tragedy afflicting the church. In the best case scenarios, believers listen to the Word when a preacher is speaking from it, and they may follow along, but they don’t give themselves to it as a pupil, on a regular basis, eager to discover its secrets. The Spirit within us yearns to lead us into all truth, to help us relish and savor it. We have the Spirit to cook with, so to speak. Let’s stop and meet him in the pages of His word, walking through it and learning together. That’s the sort of training that sticks with a person!
