Please Don’t Call Security

Hello folks, it’s a pleasure to see everyone gathered back together on my porch today. Have a seat, and let’s chat…~smile~

I totally enjoyed my recent trip to Charleston, South Carolina for the SIBA conference, though it was far too brief! I’d love to return to that beautiful historic city for a longer visit. However, I’m still grateful I wasn’t detained for questioning during my stay, although there was that one time that had me working on an alibi…

That particular day I was heading to an author panel I was to moderate when I realized I’d left my notes in the hotel room. I swanee! There was just enough time to run back up and retrieve them. I was in hasty transient when my friend, River, another author you’ve heard me mention, texted me asking to borrow my big daddy hairdryer. We had bunked together the night before but her room was now ready and she’d moved her belongings over during lunch. River had also told me, and this is the part I’m using for an excuse, that our rooms were adjoining. I’m just saying, I distinctly recall her telling me that we should open the connecting doors between our rooms and have one big suite. Let the story continue.

I ran into my room, grabbed the necessary items, and opened the door on my side. In my haste, it may have hit the wall with a bang. Knock! Knock! Knock! I rapped loudly on River’s door and used our nicknames for each other, “Cat! Open up! It’s me, Dog!”

There was an immediate reaction from the other room. I heard feet running and the sound of a bolt lock. I waited, impatiently, and knocked harder, “Open us, Cat!” And then I waited some more and some more. And that’s when it hit me. River was wrong about our rooms connecting. The noise I heard wasn’t her trying to let me in. It was some other poor soul trying to keep me out.

I left as quickly and quietly as possible, praying I wouldn’t meet security in route. It’s not like I try to start trouble, y’all. It actually happens with very little effort at all.

Hugs,
Shellie
