Syncing your Soul

My sweet farmer got me a two-seater kayak for my birthday and I’m totally loving my early morning trips down the lake, just me and Jesus. Mind you, there’s room for Dixie but other than that one time when I pushed, I mean, when I helped her into the kayak, she’s chosen not to participate. I didn’t mean any harm. I really thought Scaredy Dog would like it, but no, she prefers to remain on the dock and register her concern, barking when I leave and barking upon my return.

When I first announced I’d gotten a new kayak via Facebook, one of my neighbor’s down the lake commented that she should get her husband, a veteran kayaker, to teach her the right way to do it, so she could join me. My family maintains my response was typical, “Right way? There’s a right way?” Indeed, I put the thing in and took off down the lake. Making it back to the dock seemed like success to me.

To be honest, however, I know I have a lot to learn. Sometimes, rare times, I can get that big kayak paddle in sync and it’s a glorious thing. I’ll be skimming across the water with very little effort. Unfortunately, the realization is generally enough to distract me and get my paddling out of kilter again.

Another thing I’ve noticed is how much easier it is to stay in a straight line if I keep my eyes trained on an object further out in front of me. If I look at my paddles, or at the kayak itself, I tend to stray, and that’s no fun. It requires a lot more effort to correct my direction than it does to maintain it! I liken it to following Jesus. As believers it’s crucial that we learn to train our eyes on Him and off of ourselves and our circumstances. Anything less hinders our progress and drains the joy from the journey. See you on the water!
