Talking While Distracted

Hello folks, let’s chat…Last week I told y’all a funny about how I caught myself in the middle of professing my love to the technician at my computer store. In the event that you missed that one, allow me to sum up the back story. Although I was very grateful to the fellow for rescuing the innards of my laptop, that’s the extent of our personal relationship. I was suffering from holiday induced TMPO while I was on the phone with him that day, (meaning I had Too Many Programs Open and Not Enough Resources to Run ‘Em). Hence, my talking while distracted episode.

i-love-lucy-phoneTalking while distracted may not be as dangerous as driving while texting, but it can lead to some interesting situations. And really, I feel a lot better about mine after hearing so many of yours. It would seem y’all have ended many a phone call with surprise sweet nothings, and to everyone from pediatricians to bill collectors. That must’ve been a nice change for that second group. Y’all have also opened phone conversations with unique greetings. My favorite was the lady who once answered her phone with, “Dear Heavenly Father.”

Your cell phone confessions served a second important purpose, too. They reminded me of a story I meant to bring y’all from that retreat I spoke to at Hawkins, TX. We were discussing the tech gap between the generations and how our kids often serve as reluctant computer geeks when a story was told about a young man who helped his mother set up her new smart phone.

Bless her heart, it was some time before she discovered that the little comedian had equipped her voicemail with the following message:

“Hi, you’ve reached my mother’s cell phone. I’m sure she would love to hear from you but don’t bother leaving a message. She’ll never get it because she doesn’t know how to check it. Just wait a while and call her back. Thanks!”

Hugs, Shellie
