That’s All I’ve Got

I have not found it easy living on opposite ends of the earth from my only daughter. Okay,
so I live in northeast Louisiana and she’s in Houston, Texas. Let’s try to avoid getting bogged down in the details.

The stretches between our face to face visits can get hard but Jessica and I have developed our own ways of being a part of each other’s daily lives. We email, we text, and, of course, we phone. Some days we spend an hour on the phone catching up. Sometimes we don’t have that sort of time, or we don’t have as much to say, but we still want that contact. For those moments, we’ve developed something called, “That’s all I’ve got.”

Jessica will call and say, “Mama—”
“What?” I’ll ask.
She may respond with, “I just saw the funniest billboard.” Or maybe she’ll say, “I just heard the best song on the radio.” Regardless, she’ll describe it, I’ll comment and she’ll say, “That’s all I’ve got” — which in our language means, “I just wanted to hear your voice.” We sign off a bit happier and a little more content with our separation than we were before.

We’d all develop healthier prayer lives if we thought of our fellowship with the Father in much the same way. Sometimes our prayers are lengthy because they need to be. You’ll never grow any closer to the Lord shooting up haphazard little phrases if you don’t make quality time with Him a priority in your life. But if you do carve out that special time, you’ll find that also incorporating some “that’s all I’ve got” moments during the day will make those fall down on your knees prayers all the more precious. It’s about fellowship. He wants it. He paid for it at the Cross. We need it. Let’s do it.

Happy Easter Hugs,
Shellie
