“Mrs. Lyon Gets Even”
Do y’all remember not too long ago when I told y’all about my friend’s boss—Mr. I.R. Lyon? We gave him a fake name to stay out of trouble. Well, here’s another one on Mr. Lyon.
You might remember that Mr. Lyon has a real high opinion of himself. As aggravating as that is on his staff, it is even harder on his sweet wife. You’d like Mrs. Lyon’s. She’s a long-suffering little lady and by golly, I could swear she still loves that man. I just don’t know why…
The Lyons’ have six sweet children. The kids are well-mannered and highly thought of at our local elementary school. Mrs. Lyon is proud of them in an endearing sort to of way. Mr. Lyon, on the other hand, well, you’d think he’d done it all by himself. My friend told me that he had the most annoying habit of calling his wife “Mother of Six” in spite of her repeated objections. The whole staff finds it obnoxious and has long wondered why his wife puts up with it. Evidently Mrs. Lyon finally got her belly full. (Now, remember, a good southern lady will try to get things done without causing a big scene, but in the end, she will do what she has to do.)
My friend saw it first hand. They were at a political event the other day, a big hoity-toity fundraiser. Late that night, after monopolizing every conversation in sight, Mr. Lyon decided it was time to leave. Instead of walking over to his wife’s side and inquiring whether she was ready, he chose to holler out at the top of his voice, “Shall we go home ‘Mother of six?”
To everyone’s surprise and delight Mrs. Lyon responded quietly, “Anytime you’re ready, father of four.”
