Banker in Training

I’ve said it many times. The best stories are the true ones and the best of the true ones come from my readers. For instance, today’s chuckle comes from Mike in Atlanta. He wrote me a while back with this account of his charming baby girl, who just might have a future in the banking business. Mike was happy to let me share this story on his budding executive.

One evening not long ago Mike went to say goodnight prayers with his seven-year-old daughter, Ann Elise. As is their custom, Mike and Ann Elise read a few storybooks, and talked over the day’s events. Then he tucked her in and knelt down by her bed while she said her prayers. A few minutes later, Mike was leaving the bedroom when he realized he had some coins jiggling in his pocket. He reached in and pulled out four pennies. “Here,” he said as he let the pennies clink one by one into Ann Elise’s small ceramic bank. “They’re all yours.”

“Thanks,” Ann Elise. Mike was about to close the door when his little girl called out again. “Daddy!”

“Yes, Ann Elise, what is it?” Mike asked, wondering if she was about to fall back on one of her time delaying requests, like asking for a glass of water. But, Ann Elise had something else on her mind.

“I forgot to tell you something.” She said. “Guess what I found today?”

“I can’t imagine, honey,” her daddy answered. “Tell me, what did you find today?”

Ann Elise gleefully announced that she had found a dollar bill.

“Wow!” Mike exclaimed. “All the good things happen to you. Can I have it?”

The little banker never missed a bit. “No sir,” she said, seriously, “but you can have
your pennies back!”
