Bubba Spills the Beans

Hello folks, I’m so happy to be off the road that I can’t stand myself, but true to form, I’ve got stories stacked up sky high from my recent travels. Have a seat and let’s chat…~smile~

I met some mighty fine people in Bainbridge, Georgia, not to mention the neighboring community of Climax. After speaking at a ladies retreat for Calvary Baptist Church, it was my great pleasure to accept an invite from the girl who organized the event to join her large extended family for a Saturday evening fish fry.

The food and the fellowship were flowing in excess, just like I like it, and I got to meet a fine old storyteller named Uncle Ed. Word has it that Uncle Ed really didn’t get started good, that he has a ton of stories where this came from, but here’s one of the beauties he shared with me.

Many years ago now, there was a man in their hometown named Bubba Newsome, whose habit it was to tell folks that he’d “send up a few words for ‘em”, meaning that he would take their prayer requests to the throne. Now, there was another fellow in town by the name of Red Allen who, by all accounts, did less praying and more drinking. Every so often Red would fall completely off the wagon and disappear for days at a time, down and out, and under the influence.

One day, Bubba and Red met up at the grocery store. After exchanging pleasantries, Bubba told Red that he’d send up a few words for him to which Red lowered his voice and confided that he’d just sobered up from a two week drunk and he’d sure appreciate the prayer. At that news, Bubba Newsom stopped in his tracks and began his petition, “Lord,” he began. “I’d like to have a few words with you about my friend, Red. He’s gone and fallen off the wagon again. The poor boy just got off a two week drunk.”

The folks in Georgia are stil laughing about what happened next! Red’s head jerked up in horror. “For heavens’ sakes,” he told Bubba, “Don’t tell Him that!”

Hugs,
Shellie
