Shellie’s Sloppy Joes
Hello folks and welcome back to the All Things Southern kitchen! When we were growing up back on Bull Run Road, find Mama cooking up Sloppy Joes for supper was a real treat! That’s been many moons ago now, but you know what? I still feel the same way about these sweet and savory sandwiches. I’m going to share my homemade sloppy joe recipe with y’all. It slays the stuff you can get in the can. Ready? Let’s do this!
“Shellie’s Homemade Sloppy Joes with Mrs. Billie’s Cole Slaw”
2 pounds lean ground beef
1 (14 1/2-ounce) can Del Monte diced tomatoes with Green Peppers and Onions
1 cup ketchup
¾ cup of water
1/2 cup bottled barbecue sauce
2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons diced jalapeños in a jar
1 tablespoon liquid from diced jalapeños in a jar
Toasted hamburger buns
We’ll begin by browning two pounds of ground beef. We’ll drain it and return it to the skillet. Then we’ll stir in a 14.5 ounce jar of diced tomatoes. I like to use Del Monte with green peppers and onions. Add in a half cup of barbecue sauce, a cup of ketchup, and two tablespoons Worcestershire sauce. Now, if you like a little heat, and we do, add a couple tablespoons of diced jalapenos from a jar along with a tablespoon of the juice they’re packed in. Yum! That’s optional, of course. Cook for 15-20 minutes over a medium heat and serve on toasted hamburger buns with a helping of Mrs. Billie’s cole slaw. You can find that recipe here on my website, too. Have mercy! Those are Shellie’s Homemade Sloppy Joes and they’re mighty good eating from the All Things Southern kitchen to yours.
Hugs, Shellie
