A Handy Clue to the Sweet Life

I slid my phone in my purse, stepped inside the restaurant and scanned the room as casually as possible to see if I could spot anyone who looked like they were waiting to have lunch with me. No, that’s not my normal lunch date practice, but I needed a hint. It’d been a busy morning. I knew I was supposed to be at that restaurant, at that time, on that day, and I even knew what was on the agenda, but I was drawing a blank on the name of the sweet woman who set up the meeting!

I was about to check the calendar in my phone for clues when someone called out, “Shellie! Over here…” Excellent! The faces clicked and (will wonders never cease) so did the names. Moments later, our last two attendees arrived and we began discussing the program for muscle Team Madness, a wonderful event where professional athletes and their big strong muscles are paired with young people and their challenged muscles to raise money for research. After detailing the program, and our parts in it, the event’s organizer asked us how we felt about it.

Corey, my fellow emcee, assured her that with a program and a few cheat sheet cards on the main players, he was comfortable winging it.” The organizer breathed a sigh of relief and looked at me. Winging it, of course, is the story of my life.

“It’ll be fine,” I assured her. “My goal will be to make sure that everyone there enjoys the evening. I’ve learned that if we do that, the rest will take care of itself.”

Can I just say that’s a pretty good metaphor for life in general! If Corey and I had made the evening about us, it would have been a dud. We knew that the way to make it a success was to make it about those gathered with us. Philippians 2:3 tells us to consider others more important than ourselves. Truly, y’all, the more we heed that advice, the sweeter life becomes for all involved.

My hugs and His Great Blessings,
Shellie
